My earliest memories of my grandfather Guido Ragghianti were in the fields and vineyards surrounding his home in St. Helena on Charter Oak Avenue picking and crushing grapes. My first memory of wine was seeing crushed grape s in a large, woo den fermentation tank. I was mesmerized by the color, smell, and taste of the crushed grapes. I distinctively remember putting my fingers in the grape must a licking the luscious grape juice from my fingers. It seemed as if I had spent hours doing this on one particular afternoon and as I reflect back, I was lucky that the juice had not yet fermented – otherwise I would have been one little sick Italian boy! I also remember receiving sweet wine from my grandfather when I was just age 4.

In 1984 Spencer and Amizetta decided it was time to begin construction on a winery. They wanted to create a small boutique facility that was perfectly matched to the production needs of the estate’s harvest. They enlisted the services of Justin Meyers (the founder and winemaker of Silver Oak Cellars) to help design their dream winery. Together the three created a design they dubbed “a wine makers winery.”

The winery site was strategically located within the vineyards to ensure production of the best possible estate wines. Spencer worked on constructing the winery with his own two hands. In 1985 it was completed and Amizetta Vineyards launched Amizetta Winery.
